2006 AICA Member Survey Results

One purpose of the Alberta Injury Control Alliance is to provide a mechanism for reporting on activities throughout the province that align with the Alberta Injury Control Strategy and for sharing them with other stakeholders. In order to track the efforts of AICA members which align with the Strategy, Active AICA Members agreed to provide annually a brief written synopsis of their injury control activities related to the Alberta Injury Control Strategy’s goals and objectives. With December 1, 2006 being the first anniversary of the official launch of the Alberta Injury Control Alliance, the first AICA member survey was conducted.

Alberta Injury Control Alliance
Officially Launched with 159 Founding Members!

Photo Gallery - AICA Launch Highlights

Over 100 people turned out at the Royal Alberta Museum on December 1, 2005, for the official launch of the Alberta Injury Control Alliance (AICA), under the distinguished patronage of The Honourable Norman L. Kwong, Lieutenant-Governor of The Province of Alberta. The launch event was attended by representatives of several key government departments, several MLAs, and other supporters including about 85 of the Alliance’s 159 Founding Members.

Gord Steinke, Global TV Anchor, welcomed everyone as Master of Ceremonies for the program. He introduced the school patrol children who directed people into the building from the parking lot, thanking them for their daily contributions to keeping Alberta's children safe. Dick Ramsay and Barb Kusyanto, co-chairs of the Alberta Injury Control Strategy Advisory Committee, introduced a number of dignitaries, acknowledged Honorary Patron Lt. Governor Norman Kwong, the Alberta Injury Control Strategy Advisory Committee members, AICA's Founding Members, and other key people. They also provided some background on injuries in Alberta, the Strategy and the Alliance. Hon. Rob Renner brought greetings from the Government of Alberta. Several key government departments participated by laying the first glass blocks as cornerstones of a symbolic ‘foundation’ built by the members that day. They also made time capsule submissions related to the current state of injuries in Alberta and their vision for the future.

The MC called out the names of all organizational Founding Members of AICA as those present added their personalized glass blocks and time capsule submissions. Finally individual members added their blocks to the wall. It was an impressive sight to see the finished glass wall which demonstrated the breadth, scope and number of AICA members. It also made a great photo opportunity for the many television and personal cameras in the room. Each participating AICA member was presented with a ballpoint pen engraved with the Alberta Injury Control Alliance name and logo and 'Founding Member'. We were entertained by a wonderful and very colourful performance of the Rainbow Spirit Dancers, a group of Aboriginal school children. After the program, everyone in attendance was invited to stay for lunch and have a piece of "Congratulations Alberta" cake.

The event resulted in some valuable media coverage, government attention, several donations, and calls and emails from a number of potential members who found out about the Alliance through the event and want to get involved. Most importantly it recognized the 159 committed organizations and individuals who have already joined forces in support of the Alberta Injury Control Strategy. Several Founding Members took advantage of the offer to have their personalized glass blocks permanently etched with the AICA name and logo, words 'Founding Member' and their name as a souvenir of the event for a financial donation.

For those interested in finding out more about AICA, information and membership application forms are available on this website (www.albertainjurycontrol.com). Thanks to everyone for your valuable contributions to injury control in Alberta! Keep up the good work - and stay tuned as the momentum builds. The Alberta Injury Control Alliance especially thanks its 159 Founding Members and all those who have since joined and added to the membership base.
